Dunedin sits at the head of Otago Harbour in the lower South Island and is home to
New Zealand's oldest university. That last fact shapes the city more than its geography
does.
The university year runs the calendar
Dunedin's population and activity swing noticeably between term time and the breaks.
During semester the city is busy; over the long summer break a significant part of the
population simply leaves.
This is the strongest calendar effect of any New Zealand city apart from the resort
towns, and it works in the opposite direction — Dunedin is quietest when Queenstown is
busiest.
A compact, walkable centre
The Victorian and Edwardian city centre around the Octagon is small and easy to get
around on foot. Suburbs climb the surrounding hills, which are steeper than visitors
usually expect.
The compactness means an incall in or near the centre is accessible to most of the
city, though the hill suburbs can be a slower trip than the distance suggests.
Practical notes
Weather. Dunedin is cool and can be grey; winters are cold by New Zealand standards
without being extreme.
Accommodation. Concentrated in and around the centre, which makes outcall
straightforward for visitors.
Smaller market. Dunedin is smaller than the main North Island centres. Less
competition for advertisers, but also a narrower pool of demand.

Timing to the academic year matters here. Listings generally perform better during
semester than over the long summer break, which is close to the reverse of the pattern
in tourist-driven parts of the South Island.
The smaller market means a good listing can hold a strong position without competing
against volume.
