Palmerston North is the main centre of the Manawatū, sitting at a junction of routes
through the lower North Island. A lot of people pass through, and a lot more come in
from the surrounding districts.
A regional hub
Palmerston North serves the Manawatū and reaches into Horowhenua, Rangitīkei and
Tararua. For people in the smaller towns across that area, this is the city they come
to — local options are limited or nonexistent.
That makes the effective market considerably larger than the city's own population

University and defence
Massey University's main campus is here, along with a significant defence presence at
Linton and Ohakea nearby. Both contribute a steady, largely transient population that
doesn't follow the usual local rhythms.

Getting around. Flat, compact and easy to drive. The Square anchors the centre and
most of the city is within ten to fifteen minutes.
Passing through. Palmerston North is a natural overnight stop for people travelling
between Wellington, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay, which adds a steady trickle of short-stay
visitors.

and how far — genuinely widens your reach, because a meaningful share of potential
