Almost every directory has some form of "verified" marker. Very few explain what it
means, and there is no shared standard behind the word.
Here is how verification usually works, and — more usefully — what it does not prove.
Common verification methods
Contact verification. The site confirms a phone number or email is reachable.
This proves the account holder controls that contact point. It says nothing about
who appears in the photos.
Photo verification. The advertiser submits a photo taken to order, often holding
a handwritten note or in a specified pose, which staff compare against the listing
photos. This is stronger — it links the person in the gallery to the person
submitting — but it depends entirely on how carefully staff compare them.
Identity document checks. Some platforms sight a government ID to confirm age
and identity. This is the strongest form and also the most privacy-sensitive: it
means the platform is holding, or has seen, identity documents.
Ongoing checks. A one-off check at signup ages quickly. Some directories re-verify
periodically or re-check when photos change.
What a verified badge does not tell you
Even a well-run verification process is limited. A badge generally does not tell
you that:
- the photos are recent
- the rates or services listed are current
- the platform has met the person
- anything about conduct or reliability
Verification answers a narrow question — usually "is this account controlled by the
person it claims to be?" — and nothing beyond it.
Age verification is different
Confirming that everyone advertising is 18 or over is not a premium feature; it is a
legal requirement, and it should apply to every listing rather than being a badge
some advertisers opt into.
Any platform that treats age confirmation as optional is failing at the basics.
How to read a badge sensibly
- Find the page explaining the method. If there isn't one, the badge means little.
- Check whether it is a one-off or an ongoing check.
- Notice what the platform claims — and does not claim.
- Keep using your own judgement. No badge replaces it.

photos are reviewed by a person before they appear publicly, and newly uploaded
photos on live listings are re-checked. Our verified marker is not a guarantee of
conduct, and we would rather say that plainly than imply more than we can back up.
